Avoid Common Trucking Insurance Mistakes

by Steve Turner

Fleet and truck owners invest innumerable hours, intense labor, and vigilant attention towards growing their businesses, so it is important that they cover their risk of financial loss by purchasing proper trucking insurance. If they overlook this basic component of business they are risking the long-term security of their company or employment.

There are many mistakes that are commonly made by truck owners when they purchase their trucking insurance policies. By talking with an insurance agent or researching insurance policies on the internet these mistakes can be avoided.

Many drivers set their coverage limits too low. After purchasing the initial policy, extra coverage can be added for minimal costs. The limits can often be doubled and only make a 10 percent change in premiums.

It is crucial that you read and understand the insurance policy before you purchase it. The legal jargon in insurance policies can be hard to understand, so if you can't understand what you are being presented with get advice or help from someone who will understand. Make sure you do this before you purchase the policy because afterwards is too late.

There are numerous choices available to you when adding extra coverage. Two types include the duties to defend or indemnify. Decide if it is important to you for your insurance company to defend you if you get sued, and for them to pay - and to what extent- if there is a judgment against you.

The two basic types of insurance are casualty and liability coverage. Casualty coverage will pay for unexpected events such as an accident, and liability will protect you from the actions of others who claim their loss was your fault. There are many variables within these two types, so ask about what options are best for your situation.

Since the trucking industry and insurance policies have so many variables, many drivers ask for help from an insurance expert. Insurance brokers would be a great source of information when looking for trucking insurance coverage. Brokers work with numerous insurance providers, and sell many different types of policies, so they will be able to give you the advice you are looking for and get your policy for the lowest price.
