There are many different scholarships that are tailored specifically for the African American woman. These scholarships include programs for the athlete, the exceptional student, or the truly dedicated person.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), a governing body of college and university athletic programs, sponsors scholarships for african american women through its Ethnic Minority and Women’s Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarship for Careers in Athletics. The goal of this scholarship is to increase the pool of qualified female and minority candidates in the field of intercollegiate athletics administration by providing them with the financial means to pursue postgraduate studies. Qualified candidates are women who are applying to graduate programs in sports-related fields of study that will direct them towards careers in intercollegiate athletics.
The Black Women in Sports Foundation can provide additional scholarship assistance for those African American women looking to attend college. The Black Women in Sports Foundation offers the Madeline Kountze Dugger-Kelly Scholarship which assists African American women who are currently enrolled in college and have been active in sports. This scholarship is awarded based upon the community service and character of the student.
BISA, or Black Women in Sisterhood for Action, began in 1980 to assist African American women with education and career advancement. BISA assists African American women of disadvantaged backgrounds in obtaining an education so that they can in turn get a better career. The scholarships are awarded to those candidates who show exceptional leadership skills, academics, and career goals. BISA also can provide transportation, life coaching, and tutoring for those who are in its programs.
The National Black Hook-up of Black Women, Inc, NHBW, seeks to raise the standard of the African American woman and their families by providing financial support and cultural influence. There are many different aspects of this incorporation, including health assistance, culture and art advancement. These scholarships are awarded to women who are in financial need and are attempting to attend college without the financial assistance of family or life partners.
In New Jersey, the Association of Black Women Lawyers of New Jersey, or ABWL-NJ began in 1975 to assist the women of New Jersey to continue their educations. This association funds candidates who are African American, female, and pursuing a law degree. These candidates are awarded scholarships based upon their need and community service record.
The Association of Black Women Physicians offers the Rebecca Lee, MD Scholarship which is offered to African American women who are enrolled in a college in Southern California or who live in Southern California and are seeking a medical degree. This association also offers public health and financial support through various outreach programs.
No matter what the major, there is a scholarship for African American women to pursue to make college education more affordable and attainable.
